Waste and food security: EU Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis meets with citizens

How can food waste be reduced? How safe is our food? These are some of the questions that will feed into the dialogue with the EU Health Commissioner Andriukaitis.

88 million tons of food are wasted in Europe. In 2016, the Commission launched the EU Platform on Food Loss and Food Waste involving all relevant actors. In October 2017 the European Commission adopted new guidelines facilitating compliance of providers and recipients of surplus food. The revised waste legislation package adopted on 30 May 2018 binding Member States to reduce food waste, to monitor and to report annually on food waste levels. The European Union aims at ensuring a high level of food security through targeted policies and controls throughout the food chain. Every European citizen has the right to know how the food he eats is produced, processed, packaged, labelled and sold.
